Will FSU continue to respond to adversity as they have done throughout the season?

Image
The number seven Florida State Seminoles are back in action this afternoon to play their second game against the USF Bulls this season. The last time these two teams faced off, the Noles came out on top 6-2 in Tampa. Four FSU batters recorded two hits (Lodise, M. Williams, C. Williams, and Cal Fisher), and Evan Chrest was still on the mound. This FSU looks a little different now, as they're dealing with some injuries across the board, but this hasn't stopped them before.     Throughout the season, the Noles have responded to adversity time and time again.      After starting the season 15-0, FSU dropped their first game to the Florida Gators, where the Noles only put up two runs. They followed this with a sweep of the BC Eagles in their first conference series of the young season and outscored the Eagles 28-4.     The very next week, the Noles took a pretty bad midweek loss to Mercer, who has now defeated FSU in their last tw...

Weekend Series Preview: Penn

Image
The Florida State Seminoles, D1Baseball's ninth team in the country, will host the Penn Quakers of the Ivy League in the second series at Dick Howser in this young season. Due to the weather, Penn has yet to play a game in this 2025 season, which can pose a tricky situation for FSU.      However, Coach Jarrett has his boys ready. In his weekly presser, Jarrett said, "They're a competitive team, they're a regional team. John Yurkow knows what he's doing."     Penn's head coach, John Yurkow, has been very successful over his ten years at Penn. He's coached the Quakers to two 30+ win seasons in two out of the last three years and two consecutive Ivy League Conference championships. He then led them onto the Auburn Regional in 2023 and the Charlottesville Regional last season.  Penn Roster Outlook     When asked about Penn, Coach Jarrett made it a point to highlight how experienced the Quakers are as a team.     " T...

Midweek Preview: The Noles take a trip to Tampa and take on the Bulls for their first road trip of the season

Image
The #5 FSU Seminoles travel down to Tampa to face the USF Bulls in the first road game of the season. The Bulls finished last season with a record of 26-29 and just missed the AAC conference tournament.     The Noles are coming off a dominant opening weekend outing after sweeping JMU, outscoring the Dukes 27-2. The Bulls are coming from a slight upset series victory against the Iowa Hawkeyes, taking the series two games to one.     The Bulls made a sneakily good hire this offseason and brought in a great head coach, Mitch Hannahs. Hannahs was previously the head coach for the Indiana State Sycamores. Over his ten-year tenure at ISU, Hannahs won four Missouri Valley Conference championships and made it to four of the last five NCAA tournaments (they hosted their first Super Regional in 2023).      Offensive Expectations USF     The Bulls play a much different brand of baseball than FSU saw over the weekend against JMU. The...

Madness is around the corner, but baseball season is here!

Image
March Madness is looming, but this week is still a massive week for FSU sports as the Noles return to the diamond for an opening weekend series against JMU. There are a lot of expectations surrounding this year's FSU squad, coming off of a season where FSU made it all the way to the final four teams in the MWCS.      The Noles lost two of their biggest bats from a season ago, Cam Smith and James Tibbs III, to the MLB draft. Coach Jarrett and staff have worked hard to bring in talent to replace this whole lineup and may have done just that.  Let's look at what the Noles' 2025 roster looks like. Pitching Righties: Joe Charles - 33.1 IP, 37 K, 19 BB, 5.94 ERA David Barrett - 15.1 IP, 8.80 ERA, 22 K, 18 BB (in 2023) Cam Leiter - 35.0 IP, 4.63 ERA, 56 K, 22 BB Maison Martinez (VCU Transfer) - 42.1 IP, 2.98 ERA, 41 K, 19 BB Ben Barrett - 13.2 IP, 5.27 ERA, 12 K, 4 BB Ryan Denison - 3.2 IP, 17.18 ERA, 5 K, 6 BB Evan Chrest (JU Transfer) - 68.2 IP,...

Weekend Series Recap: FSU deafeats Boston College in a gritty, "grind-it-out" weekend series

I know it's a little later than usual, but we're back with another edition of the Stevens Scoop. Jamie Arnold prepares to start on Friday Photo Cred: FSUBaseball via X     The now #10 Florida State Seminoles won their second consecutive ACC series this weekend against the BC Eagles. FSU's second rubber match win on the season on Sunday clinched this series and improved the Noles' record to 26-5 overall and 7-5 in the ACC, while BC fell to a 17-13 overall and 6-9 in the ACC. GAME RESULTS: Game 1 - FSU: 12 | BC: 4 Game 2 - FSU: 6 | BC: 7 Game 3 - FSU: 9 | BC: 2 RECAPS AND NOTABLE PLAYERS: Game 1 Scoring:     Game one took place on a very cold and cloudy day in Chestnut Hill. This played into the pitchers' favors as no runs were but on the board until the 3rd inning. The Eagles would open up the scoring for the day after a three run HR from Cameron Leary, his team-leading 11th of the season.     FSU would chip away at the three run lead w...

A Look Ahead: Boston College and the Red Bandana

Image
The #14 Florida State Seminoles travel to Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, this weekend to take on the Eagles of Boston College. FSU enters this weekend series with a 24-4 record (5-4 in ACC play), and BC enters this weekend series in the middle of a five game win streak. The Eagles are 16-11 overall and 5-7 in ACC play.      Friday's game will be the 52nd meeting all time between these two teams, and FSU leads the all-time series 40-11. BC took this series a season ago two games to one at Dick Howser Stadium. Boston College will be sporting their Red Bandana uniforms to honor Welles Crowther and his heroics during the 9/11 attacks. The Red Bandana uniforms always seem to give the Eagles some juice across all sports so this weekend could be challenging. TALE OF THE TAPE: Batting Average - FSU: .335 (#5 nationally) vs. BC: .300 (#50 nationally) Slugging % - FSU: .581 (#6 nationally) vs. BC: .495 (#51 nationally) On Base Percentage - FSU: .424 (#34 nationally) vs...

Midweek Recap: FSU takes both midweek games to start their five game week 2-0.

The #14 Florida State Seminoles took care of business this week at home. They now hold a 24-4 record going into their weekend series at Boston College.  Noles during the Anthem Photo Cred: FSUBaseball via X  JACKSONVILLE GAME RESULTS: FSU: 5 | JU: 3 SCORING:      FSU's first game of their five game week started as a pitching duel, as the score would remain 0-0 until the 3rd inning.       In the bottom of the 3rd inning, after a McGwire Holbrook double, his third of the year, and a Cal Fisher walk, Cam Smith would bring the first run of the game across. Smith grounded out to pitcher Blake Barquin, but since there was previously only one out in the inning, Holbrook was able to cross home plate.      JU quickly responded in the top of the 4th. Clay Hodges knocked a two out single into the outfield after Will Gale was able to reach third base by some sloppy defensive play from the Noles.  Holbrook celebrat...

A Look Ahead: Jacksonville and Bethune-Cookman

Image
FSU moved up to #14 in D1Baseball.com 's top 25 ranking as of Monday, April 1st. The Noles will now move on to two, back-to-back, home games this week against Jacksonville, on Tuesday, and Bethune-Cookman, on Wednesday. FSU will look to remain undefeated in the midweek, and improve upon a strong 16-1 home record. JACKSONVILLE     The Jacksonville University Dolphins travel to Dick Howser Stadium for the second game in the season series against the Noles. The game on Tuesday will be the 180th meeting between the two teams. FSU leads the all-time series 135-44 and were victorious in six of the last ten games these teams have played. Florida State enters this week with a record of 22-4 overall and 5-4 in the ACC putting them at third in the Atlantic division. Jacksonville will enter this contest with a 13-14 overall record, however, their 7-2 ASUN record puts them atop the conference (tied with Stetson).     FSU won the first game of the season seri...
